Summer Moving – Tips From The DMV’s Premier Moving Company

Summer Moving – Tips From The DMV’s Premier Moving Company

The summer months are a convenient time to move. The climate is sultry, children are on vacation, and most importantly, there’s a multitude of homes on the market. For these reasons, summer is the busiest time of year for a moving company like ours.

Still, moving in the summer can come with some unique challenges and obstacles. Namely, the hot weather can make your move a bit exhausting. That is why it is important to make sure you plan your move properly.

As some of the most experienced movers and packers in the DMV, we feel that we are better positioned than most to offer moving advice.  With that in mind, here are some pointers on how to make your summer move smooth and stress-free.

Plan Your Move Ahead of Time

We know it might seem like we’re repeating ourselves, but it is always immensely important to plan your move far ahead of time. This is especially true during the summer months, which are the busiest time of year for moving companies like ours.  Do your research early, and make sure to look for companies with professional trained movers. Once you’ve decided on the right movers, get in touch with them as soon as possible.

Research The Best Moving Companies

We’ve all heard horror stories about incompetent movers. That is why it is so important to track down the best moving companies possible, so you can enjoy a smooth and seamless moving experience. Whatever you do, do not settle for a moving company that you’re not confident will do an amazing job.

Have conversations with a wide variety of movers.  Work with the moving company that has the best reputation, the best movers, and a track record of satisfied customers.  It’s important to keep in mind that reputable moving companies like ours are in high demand during the summer months, which is why it is so crucial to start your research early.

Pack Your Things ASAP

We know how easy it is to procrastinate. But whatever you do, do not pack your things at the last minute. The earlier you start, the more likely you will be to have everything prepared on schedule without stressing yourself out. If you’re not confident about your ability to pack on time, you can always hire a moving company to pack your things for you.

Beware Of The Most Common Packing Errors

We know packing can be boring and monotonous, but it’s important to stay focused during the packing process. If you’re not focused, you might end up making some common mistakes that slow down your move. Some of those mistakes may include:

  • Playing things by ear–not planning your moving and packing procedures ahead of time.
  • Waiting until the last minute.
  • Not sorting your items properly.
  • Packing items you no longer need instead of donating or throwing them away.
  • Not using the right packing supplies.
  • Leaving empty gaps in your moving boxes. (This is the most insidious mistake on the list!!!)
  • Filling your boxes beyond capacity.

Have Your Children Help With The Moving Process

If you have children, summer is the perfect time for them to help you with the moving process.  Since they’re on vacation, you do not have to feel guilty about distracting them from other time-critical activities.  We have written elsewhere about moving with children.

Avoid Getting Overwhelmed

The earlier you start the moving process, the less work you will have to do on a daily basis. There is absolutely no need to spend all your spare time on the logistics of packing and moving.

Feel free to take some time off any relax. Besides, it is much easier to do high quality work when you’re not rushed. It’s summer, so feel free to go swimming, get some ice cream, or see a movie.  You deserve it.

Try Not To Move On A Busy Day

While summer is the busiest time of the year for moving companies, there are some days of the week that are less popular, and therefore often cheaper. On the other hand, weekends and the beginning and end of the month are packed, which means you may be likely to get a higher rate.

Because there is so much demand for moving help on the busiest days, movers are less likely to negotiate with you on rates. But if you can move on a weekday in the middle of the month, you’re more likely to save some money.

Protect Your Prized Possessions From The Summer Heat

It’s crucial that you remember not to pack certain delicate items in the back of a hot moving truck. Certain items are temperature sensitive and need extra care during transportation.  Some of those items include:

  • Wax Items – Candles are the most obvious example here, but it’s important not to pack anything that can melt in the back of a truck.  Your other possessions can be ruined if those items melt.
  • Musical Instruments– For example, a guitar neck can become severely warped in hot weather.
  • Leather and Suede Furniture – Sometimes delicate fabrics, like high-grade leather and suede, can be damaged in high temperatures.  This will probably not be an issue for items made from synethetic leather or microsuede.
  • Media Devices – Laptops, smartphones, televisions, and other high-end electronics need to be dealt with more carefully.
  • Perishable Food Items
  • Plants

Take extra care to pack all of these items.  For tips on how to do this properly, ask reputable moving companies like ours.

Start Early On Moving Day

Try to arrange your move early in the morning. Because the weather will be relatively cool, you will be able to get more accomplished without getting too exhausted.

Still, regardless of the temperature outside, it’s important to stay hydrated and wear weather-appropriate clothing. And sunscreen is imperative no matter what time of year it is.
